The lower end of the Morrill Convention Center in New Orleans is located 1,640 feet (500 m) on Canal Street, next to the Mississippi River. It was named after former New Orleans Mayor Ernest N. Morial. As of 2006, the Morrill Convention Center in New Orleans had 1.1 million square feet (102,000 square meters) of exhibition space divided into 11 blocks, and it totaled more than 3 million square feet (280,000 square meters) of total space. The front of the main building is 1 km long.      The design plan for the Morrill Convention Center in New Orleans began in 1978. It is the fifth largest exhibition facility in the United States, having undergone a renewal and expansion in early 2005. The first part of the building was constructed in 1984, followed by the Louisiana World's Fair; During these decades, the center further expanded upstream. In 1992 Mayor Honorus Ernest N. Morial, the city's first African-American mayor, named the building. In 2008, the center was renamed the Morial Convention Center New Orleans to emphasize its New Orleans location
